April’s full moon, known as the “Pink Moon” due to the springtime bloom of phlox flowers, provided a striking celestial backdrop as NASA’s Artemis 2 mission embarked on a landmark 10-day journey toward the far side of the moon. The lunar event, visible worldwide, occurred just hours before the four astronauts – Reid Wiseman, Victor Glover, Christina Koch, and Jeremy Hansen – began their mission in low-Earth orbit.
The timing is noteworthy. The Pink Moon rises annually as the lunar disk appears fully illuminated from Earth, opposite the sun. This year, the event coincided with a pivotal moment in lunar exploration; Artemis 2 represents a significant step toward sustained human presence on and around the moon. Commander Wiseman’s statement, “We have a beautiful moon rise, we’re headed right at it,” underscores the symbolic and literal alignment of these events.
Global Spectacle Captured in Stunning Images
Photographers across the globe documented the Pink Moon’s appearance, showcasing its brilliance against various landscapes. From the UK, Josh Dury captured the moon rising over Somerset’s Brent Knoll, noting its significance within astronomical and religious calendars, such as Passover and Easter. Gregg Newton photographed the full moon rising over Florida’s Kennedy Space Center, juxtaposed with the countdown clock for the Artemis 2 mission.
Images from New York City, captured by Lokman Vural Elibol and Gary Hershorn, show the moon framed by iconic skyscrapers. In Germany, Kirill Kudryavstev caught a Boeing 777 passing in front of the lunar disk, while Luis Robayo in Argentina superimposed an Artemis 2 rocket onto a local monument. Megan Briggs’ shot from Miami highlighted the moon’s ancient lava fields and asteroid impact craters. Other striking images came from Washington D.C., where the moon appeared over the Lincoln Memorial, and Venice Beach, California, framed by palm trees.
The convergence of these events – a spectacular lunar display and a historic space mission – highlights humanity’s ongoing fascination with the cosmos and its relentless pursuit of lunar exploration. The Pink Moon served as a visible reminder of the celestial body that continues to inspire and challenge us.
