On images taken in the ultraviolet spectrum, a coronal hole looks dark. This is because the region is cooler than its surroundings. The darkness gave it its name. In reality, nothing has been hollowed out. No crater has formed on the surface or in the atmosphere.
Instead, a coronal hole represents a break in the Sun’s magnetic field. Normally, magnetic loops contain hot gas, keeping it trapped. Here, the field lines open up. They stretch out into space rather than returning to the Sun. Think of it as a window thrown wide open. This allows charged particles from the solar wind to escape at high speed.
Are Coronal Holes Dangerous?
These escaping particles drive geomagnetic storms. Such storms can threaten our electronics and power grids. They also create auroras.
Experts in space weather have analyzed these specific giant structures. They believe the event won’t trigger a major solar storm. The risk to infrastructure is low.
However, there might be a visual payoff. The solar wind could be strong enough to intensify aurora displays. Traditionally, these lights only appear at high latitudes. Now, they might drift further south.
