Just seven days remain until the moon slides directly in front of the sun. On Aug. 12 2026 Europe sees its first total solar eclipse since that famous event in 1999. This isn’t a global sweep. It’s a very specific path.

The shadow will carve through Greenland, Iceland, northern Spain, and the Balearic Islands. If you are along this narrow strip of totality, you have front-row seats to a rare event. Daylight will vanish into twilight. The sun’s puffy outer atmosphere—the corona—will flare out from behind the darkened disk. It is elusive, beautiful, and dangerous to look at without protection until totality begins.

But you are likely not in that narrow lane. Millions across the rest of Europe, parts of northeastern US, and eastern Canada will only see a partial eclipse. The moon will just bite a chunk out of the sun’s face. Less dramatic? Sure. Still worth watching if you have proper filters.

How to Watch the Total Solar Eclipse 2026

You don’t need to fly to the Azores or hike into the Icelandic highlands to experience this. You just need to know where to stand.

The path of totality starts in the Atlantic, cuts over Iceland, sweeps across northern Spain, and ends near the Balearics. Inside this path, the sun disappears completely for roughly one minute and a half. Outside of it, you see a “partial solar eclipse,” where only part of the sun is covered. The bigger the percentage, the darker it gets.

Where is the Total Solar Eclipse Visible?

Totality Path:
Greenland: Scoresby Sund and other fjords.
Iceland: The entire country gets totality.
Spain: Northern regions, specifically the province of León.
Balearic Islands: Menorca and Mallorca see totality from the coast.

Partial Eclipse Viewers:
– Most of Western and Central Europe.
– Northeastern United States.
– Eastern Canada.

Why This Eclipse Matters

Total solar eclipses are rare in any one location. In Spain, the last one was 1954. For most people in Europe, this is a once-in-a-lifetime shot. The corona is only visible during totality. That glowing halo of plasma? You need the moon to block the sun’s blinding face to see it.

The partial phases take hours. The total phase lasts seconds to two minutes. You have to be ready. Have your glasses on. Set your cameras. Breathe.
